Introduction

N-Methyl 2- Pyrrolidone (NMP), is a kind of organic compound, colourless high boiling liquid. It is used as a medium for chemical reactions and as an industrial solvent. It is completely miscible with water, ether, alcohols, esters, ketones and chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons.

N-Methyl 2- Pyrrolidone is manufactured by the reaction of Y-butyrolactone and Methylamine.

Ion Exchange Process for NMP

This process of solvent extraction products hexane which is used in the purification of vegetable oil.To have a good quality of N-Methyl 2- pyrrolidone for continuous successive processing of hexane, the salt contamination has to be removed from NMP.

Ion Exchange resins can remove soluble salts from this NMP + water mixture without any problem and also with ease of operation. The treated mixture of NMP+water contains less than 5 ppm of chloride. The removal of cations and anions through the resin beds make it easily possible to get NMP of good quality.
